CyberEdge’s annual Cyberthreat Defense Report (CDR) for 2022 found that nearly half of the surveyed companies do not use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). But this alarming finding comes with good news.
A Deeper Look Into the Survey
Significantly, respondents represent 19 various industries from 17 countries all around the world. Participants all come from companies with at least 500 employees.
Over 43% of all 1,200 surveyed IT security decision-makers and practitioners do not have Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) deployed in their companies. Furthermore, more than 11% of all respondents do not intend to deploy MFA any time soon.
Notably, among barriers to establishing effective cyber defenses, most respondents choose lack of skilled personnel and low security awareness among employees.
Here’s the Good News
On a brighter note, almost a third (31.8%) of respondents plan to acquire an MFA solution within a year. Some more good news is that, compared to last year’s survey, the use of Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) increased by 7%.
These findings prove that even though MFA still has a long way to go, cybersecurity awareness has increased significantly in the last year alone. Also, more and more compliance regulations require companies to deploy Multi-Factor Authentication as a must-have security measure, which contributes to the higher acquisition of these authentication means. Last but not least, big players in the field of cybersecurity, such as the US Infrastructure and Cybersecurity Agency (CISA), openly advertise and emphasize the importance of Multi-Factor Authentication.
Every Company Should Use MFA
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) can help you stop cybercriminals from stealing your money and data by enabling an extra layer of security on all online accounts of your users.
A common misconception is that Multi-Factor Authentication is cumbersome and annoying. Quite the contrary, modern MFA is anything but these things. For instance, you can use the Mobile Push authentication method, which allows you to complete the second authentication step with just a single tap. No hassle. No issues. No complicated user training.
MFA is simple and easy to use. Given the recent cyberattacks and data breaches, every company needs Multi-Factor Authentication, regardless of industry and company size. There really is no excuse not to deploy MFA today.
What The Future Holds
The news that 43% of companies have no MFA protection sounds discouraging. But over a third planning to get MFA within a year is a light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s hope that the light is indeed a deployment of an MFA solution and not a train of successful cyberattacks.
Here at Rublon, we anticipate that in the coming years, even more companies will decide to protect their data using Multi-Factor Authentication. We will continue evangelizing about cybersecurity and the importance of Multi-Factor Authentication, which will hopefully contribute to the greater acquisition of MFA worldwide.
